Beneath the Waves.
With two oceanic currents, the Agulhas and Benguela currents, flowing along the eastern and westerns coastlines of South Africa, our coastal waters are endowed with a phenomenal diversity of marine fauna and flora.
Due to the two oceanic currents, South Africa has a large number number of endemic species and experiences one of the largest animal migrations in the world, the Sardine Run,,which takes place up the east coast between June and August every year.
Whales
Every year Southern Right and Humpback Whales migrate to their winter breeding grounds along the southern and eastern coastline to calve and mate, before returning to their feeding grounds in Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic waters.
We also have species like Bryde's Whale and Kogia species that are permanent residents.
Dolphins
There are more than 9 species of dolphin in South African Coastal waters, with the Indo-Pacific Dolphin, the rarest species, with less than 500 occurring along the southern and eastern inshore coastline.
